Labour of Love

There has been so much planning involved. A whole year at least of my life set aside, and the many more prior worrying about it. But, I am happy to get to it finally, anxious and excited to do the work that is required. I feel that after this trip, I will be free. I will have, in my mind at least, fulfilled my last promise to my mother to see her dreams come true. This family home in the Caribbean signifies so many things. It is our source, where we were born and where we spent our earliest years. It is our place of formation, where our cultural identities were nurtured and cemented. And, as was her intention, it is our point of connection, forever binding us and reminding us that this is our shared legacy. Going back, surrounded by childhood treasures, family portraits and memorabilia, my hope is that we will get to be in their formidable presence again.
