September is World Suicide Awareness Month. I know why they chose this month. It’s a time for change… new back-to-school routines, a shift in the wind, yellow-orange-red turning leaves. Yes, we all know that. But, for some of us, the truth is it’s to celebrate the fact that we made it through the god-forsaken summer.
I knew I was in trouble when June came around and I started to see the signs. Pushing fears aside, I tried my best to over-ride the impending doom by pumping myself up with a double-dose of hope and personal accomplishments. Healthy eating, walks, karate, yoga, meditation, and sticking to the guidelines of my self-prescribed Life Journal did not save me from it.
Summertime blues. It got me AGAIN.
I see the pattern. It makes sense. Summer is a glorious respite after nine months of rigid routine. A mapped out calendar of daily adventure and activity, impromptu meet-ups with friends and trips to the ice cream shop, all set against the guilt-free languor of hot summer afternoons. High like the rising star, summer lifts us with its great expectations. Vitamin D’d with our faces to the sun, we skip a little higher, laugh a lot louder, and dream of freedom and fun. Sickly sweet summer.
I told you it was, but it truly could never be my favourite season.
